Interiors & Millwork

Custom millwork, built-ins, trim and interior finishes designed to fit the room and the way you use it.

What it is

Millwork is the custom woodwork that makes a room feel finished: built-in shelving, wall panelling, trim, cabinetry and window seats. It is designed to the room, not bought off the shelf.

We design the millwork with the rest of the interior, so the lines, finishes and lighting all work together.

How it works

  1. Measure and designWe measure the room and design the millwork around the way you use the space.
  2. Choose materialsWood, finish and hardware are chosen to suit the house and the budget.
  3. Build and fitPieces are built in the shop or on site, then installed and scribed to the walls.
  4. FinishPaint, stain or lacquer is applied, and the piece is checked before handover.

What we look at

Built-ins

Shelving, cabinets or window seats built into a wall.

Trim and panelling

Wall and ceiling detail that adds depth to the room.

Doors and openings

Custom doors and casings matched to the existing house.

Decision 1: Where interiors and millwork are used

Interiors and millwork cover built-ins, trim, panelling, doors and custom cabinetry. They are used in new homes, renovations and commercial fit-outs.

UseTypical millworkWhat matters most
Living spacesBuilt-ins, wall panels, trimProportion and the room
Bedrooms and closetsClosets, shelving, doorsStorage and access
Commercial fit-outsReception, counters, panelsDurability and code

Our pick: Design the millwork to the room. It is what makes a room feel finished.

Decision 2: Design and proportion

The millwork is designed to the room, the windows and the ceiling. Proportion is set before the material is chosen, because the lines carry the room.

ElementDesign choice
Built-insSized to the wall and the window
Trim and casingsProfile matched to the house
PanelsSpacing and height set to the room

Our pick: Set the proportion first. The material and the profile follow it.

Decision 3: Materials and finishes

The material is chosen for the look, the use and the budget. Paint-grade and stain-grade materials are different, and the finish is planned with the material.

MaterialFinishUse
MDFPaintPainted trim and panels
Solid woodStain or clearNatural look and durability
Plywood veneerStain or lacquerFlat panels and cabinets

Our pick: Match the material to the finish. Paint over stain-grade material looks wrong.

Decision 4: Shop and site work

Larger pieces are built in the shop, then delivered and installed on site. Smaller pieces are built or fitted on site to the wall.

WorkWhere
Cabinets and large panelsShop built, site installed
Trim and small built-insSite built to the wall
DoorsShop built, site hung

Our pick: Build large pieces in the shop. Fit the rest to the wall on site.

Decision 5: Installation and fit

The millwork is installed level and plumb, scribed to the walls and fixed to the framing. The fit is checked before the finish is applied.

StepCheck
Fixing to the framingSecure and into studs
Level and plumbChecked before the finish
Scribing to the wallFit to the uneven wall

Our pick: Fix to the framing, not only the drywall. Loose millwork is a common complaint.

Decision 6: Finish application

The finish is applied in the right order: fill, sand, prime, then paint or stain. The order decides how smooth and durable the result is.

StagePurpose
Fill and sandSmooth the surface
PrimeSeal and bond the finish
Paint or stainThe final look

Our pick: Fill, sand and prime before the top coat. Skipping the prime shows in the finish.

Decision 7: Coordination with the other trades

The millwork is coordinated with the electrical, the lighting, the flooring and the drywall. Outlets, switches and the floor height are set before the millwork is built.

TradeWhat millwork needs
ElectricalOutlet and switch locations set
FlooringFloor height confirmed
DrywallWalls flat and square

Our pick: Confirm the outlet locations and the floor height before the millwork is built.

Decision 8: Permits and approvals

Most millwork needs no permit. Changes to structure, to fire-rated walls or to exits for commercial work can need approval.

ScopeCheck
Built-ins and trimUsually no permit
Changes to a wallCheck with the municipality
Commercial fire-rated workCode and approval

Our pick: Confirm the approval for any change to a wall before the millwork is built.

Decision 9: Warranty and care

Millwork lasts with the right care and the finish maintained. Fixings and the finish are checked on the schedule of the house.

ItemWhat to do
FinishCleaned and refreshed when it wears
FixingsChecked yearly
Hinges and drawersAdjusted when they move

Our pick: Adjust the hardware as soon as a door moves. It stops the wear.

Questions

Can you match existing trim?

We match the profile where possible. We will tell you if an exact match is not practical.

Is millwork done on site or in a shop?

Both. Larger pieces are often built in a shop and fitted on site.

How long does it take?

It depends on the piece. We give you a timeline once the design is agreed.
