The Guy Who Never Refers
He knows everybody in the industry. He almost never sends them a name. Here is what changed his mind.
There’s a guy I heard about once.
Knows everybody. Architects, engineers, property managers, designers. He’s been in the industry long enough that his phone never stops. People ask him for referrals constantly.
He almost never gives them.
Not because he doesn’t know anyone. He knows plenty of contractors. Good ones, even. Talented people who do solid work when everything goes right.
But he learned a long time ago that a referral isn’t about talent. It’s about what happens when something doesn’t go right. And most contractors, even the good ones, are running on gut feeling and memory and whoever showed up that morning. There’s no system. There’s no process. There’s no guarantee.
So he stays quiet. Protects his name. Keeps his relationships to himself.
“Until he found someone who ran their business like he ran his.”
A process for every project before it starts. Every line item scoped. Every finish documented. Every number locked before anyone picks up a tool. Twenty years of construction knowledge, now running through technology that gives every client a level of planning that used to cost $15,000. As standard. Not a premium. Standard.
He started sending referrals.
He hasn’t stopped.
That guy exists in every industry we work in.
- The architect who protects her drawings.
- The adjuster who needs the file to move.
- The designer who won’t let her selections get swapped out.
- The property manager who needs unit forty to feel like unit one.
They all know people. They’re all careful about who they send them to.
This is who we built this for.
